Athens Area Habitat for Humanity has added house demolition to its mission of building low-cost housing for people who live in Athens. The "deconstruction program" is called ReHOUSE (Recycling Home Owner Units Safely and Efficiently), and uses volunteers to level vacant houses and clean up trash and debris in an effort to curb blight.
Workers salvage all usable materials and sell them at Habitat's ReStore, a shop whose proceeds are used to help pay the cost of building Habitat houses.
